Long time Shanghai residents, Stephen White and Patrick Cranley will share their insights, photos and stories of the city's development over the past 25 years. Through the lens of an Architect/designer, Stephen will trace the development of Shanghai's infrastructure modernization from the early 1990s from the city's commercial center in Hongqiao to sky scrapers in Nanjing Road and of course the birth of Lujiazui. While Patrick, an expert in early 20th Century Shanghai will discuss both the impact on the built environment and social fabric of a modernizing city.

    Stephen White is an Australian who came to China as a project architect, on a 3 month assignment some 30 years ago. After completing a variety of significant projects in Hong Kong and Shanghai, he established his own design and build firm, IACTION in Shanghai in 1996.

    As an architect and photographer, Stephen has captured the early development of Shanghai, particularly the planning for Pudong, construction of the first A Grade buildings, elevated roads and freeways, bridges, metro lines and the Pudong airport through his photographs.

    His company IACTION has been at the forefront of Shanghai’s urban development over more than two decades. Some highlights include, moving the first tenant, Dresdner Bank, into the Jin Mao tower in 1998, which at the time was China’s tallest building; moving the Star Alliance group from the original Shanghai airport at Hongqiao to Pudong airport and as the local architect for the USA National Pavilion and Australia Pavilion for the Shanghai World Expo 2010.
    Stephen believes being flexible and adaptive both personally and as a company have contributed to his success during this dynamic period. He feels privileged to have been part of this time in China and happy to share his knowledge and experience with others.

    Patrick Cranley is Managing Director of AsiaMedia, a leading China-focused marketing strategy and public relations agency. His academic background is in the economics and politics of the People’s Republic of China, which he studied at Brown University, the University of Michigan and the Hopkins-Nanjing Center. He also holds an MBA from Michigan’s Ross School. He served on the board of the American Chamber of Commerce in Shanghai for five years, including a year as Chairman in 2000, and is a member of the National Council on US-China Relations.

    In 1998, Patrick co-founded Historic Shanghai, a group dedicated to research and raising the awareness of the city’s architectural heritage. He is a board member of the International Coalition of Art Deco Societies (ICADS) and of the Shanghai Foreign Correspondents’ Club. He has appeared as a commentator on China Central Television, the BBC, CNN, the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation, the Australian Broadcasting Corporation, Discovery Channel, CBS Sunday Morning, and several TV documentaries on topics in business and Shanghai history.
